Ugly win for the Browns

Some observations from today’s game against the Bills:

1. The game was painful to watch. The wind made it difficult for both teams, but the Bills were pitiful.

2. Derek Anderson had a tough day, but his stats were laughably bad, and made his performance look even worse. The Browns receivers were terrible as they dropped pass after pass (are we sure Braylon Edwards wasn’t on the field?). Robert Royal in particular has stone hands. I think defenses are leaving him open on purpose hoping Anderson will throw to him, knowing Royal will drop most passes.

3. The running game was solid. The Bills can’t stop the run, and the Browns were able to exploit it, even on a day when the conditions made it necessary to run.

4. I’m thrilled that we traded Edwards, but it will take some time for this group of receivers to gel. I’m disappointed we’re not seeing more of Brian Robiskie.

5. It’s encouraging to see the Browns limit their penalties and play so well on special teams. It’s hard after a game like this to gauge the team’s progress, but the Browns looked like a well-coached team, while the Bills looked like a mess.

Thinning the herd

I have to admit I like the purge that’s taking place under Eric Mangini and George Kokinis. The process may be painful to watch, as it may be some time before the Browns start winning games on a consistent basis, but the quick fix never works in the NFL. The Browns need to build a new foundation, and getting quality players who are selfless and buy into the system is a necessary ingredient. It’s also important to weed out the bad apples like Braylon Edwards, or inconsistent players who want too much money, like Kellen Winslow.

Some have whined about the number of former Jets on the roster, but those players are all contributing. Guys like Abram Elam are setting a very positive tone on the team.

Naturally, talent is also critical, and over time the Browns need players with the talent of a Braylon Edwards. But, the talented players need to be placed in a system that breeds success. Bill Belichick built the Patriots from the bottom up, often with players that most fans knew little about. meanwhile, idiots like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones focus on big-name players, yet they always fall short.

Give Mangini and Kokinis time. One idiotic sportswriter called Mangini the worst NFL coaching hire ever. He may eat his words in time.

Pressure is on C.C. Sabathia

C.C. Sabathia is a good guy, so I’m sure many Tribe fans will wish him well as he enters the postseason for the Yankees, despite the fact that Sabathia took the money after saying he really wanted to stay in Cleveland. Of course, most Tribe fans won’t be rooting for Sabathia and the Yankees tonight. Frankly, I’d love to see the Twins pull off the upset.

Indians fans know all too well how Sabathia has come up short in the playoffs. In 2007 the Indians would have gone to the World Series had Sabathia not been out-pitched by Josh Beckett with the Indians holding a 3-1 series lead against Boston. The Tribe would have faced an inferior Colorado Rockies team that was swept by the champion Red Sox.

Can Sabathia rise to the occasion? He’s not the only Yankee that has something to prove. A-Rod the cheater has also been a choke artist in the playoffs (drugs can’t fix everything), so we’ll see how the heavily-favored Yankees do with this new cast of expensive characters.
