Wickman rolls & waddles to his 40th save

Great Tribe win tonight over the A’s, 5-3. A crucial victory in a crucial series.

But that’s not the best part. The best part came on a double play in the 9th, with Bob Wickman covering first, during which he fell over at first base, literally just fell over as he was running to the base, rolled around on the ground like Tommy Lasorda at the All-Star Game, rolls into the base runner, thereby keeping him from touching first base, and knocking him over. The ball goes flying. Wickman gets up, runs to the ball. The hitter is writhing in pain down the baseline after getting rolled by Bob Wickman, and Wickman waddles himself to first base to collect the second out of the double play. Greatness.

Wickman haters, you gotta admit. That was one of the funniest things all year.

Let’s see how Wade compares to Lebron NOW

The Miami Heat have undergone a complete overhaul this offseason, some of it to the benefit of the Cavs, losing point guard Damon Jones to the Cavs last week. Shaq is downplaying it. It’s hard to imagine Shaq’s game going down. But I’m damn sure of one thing…Lebron James’ numbers will go up, and Dwayne Wade’s numbers will go down. And thus, we may have heard the last of the “Wade is better than Lebron” idiocy.

Lebron’s scoring will go up. This year’s Cavs team spreads the floor like never before. With Jones and Donyell Marshall, the 3-point line will have to be constantly guarded by opposing teams. With Larry Hughes’ driving ability, you gotta watch him like a hawk, too. That leaves the floor almost wide open for Lebron. He’ll hit more threes. He’ll have fewer triple teams, and he’s proven he can beat a double team. Lebron’s scoring could shoot through the roof.

Lebron’s assists will go up, too. Now, everybody around Lebron can score. Missed shots off of passes that Lebron used to send at unsure shooters will more often fall into the basket. Zydrunas Ilgauskas will be more open underneath, and Lebron’s going to find him every time he’s open. Lebron might lose a few offensive rebounds, but defensive rebounds might open up, as his entire team now has to be watched carefully for fast breaks, allowing Lebron to get that huge frame to the boards.

And Wade? He’s now got to contend with Jason Williams as a ball-hogging point guard, Antoine Walker wants to score, and they’re even talking of bringing in Gary Payton to fill some of the holes. Yeah…that’ll help Wade’s numbers. Bottom line, Wade’s days as comparable to Lebron are going to end with this season. And Lebron’s numbers, as incredible as they are now, will get better and better. Just like Lebron himself.

Sabathia gets Millwood’s disease

Losing 2-0 to the A’s last night, CC Sabathia must feel like the curse of Kevin Millwood is spreading into his start. Or, perhaps Millwood’s lack of offensive support just shifted one day forward. If that’s the case, the Tribe should score about a billion runs tonight for Millwood.

They’d better score some. The second game of this series is absolutely crucial.

Dilfer off to a bad start

The biggest disappointment in the opener was the play of Trent Dilfer. He got off to a decent start in the first have, but he made some terrible throws in the second half. I thought our offensive coordinator did a good job calling plays, and often there were open receivers downfield. Dilfer just missed too many receivers.

As usual, Dilfer showed that he’s a man of character as he took the blame after the game. That’s certainly a refreshing change. He also deserves more time, much more time, to find his rhythm with the rest of the offense. I’m sure that Crennel will show patience here and not rush in Charlie Frye.

That said, Dilfer needs to play better. Let’s hope he starts next week against a weak Green Bay team.
