Lebron about to go historic

How good will Lebron James be in the 2005-2006 season, his third year in the NBA? Let’s look at Michael Jordan’s early career for comparison.

Jordan spent most of his second season, 1985-86, on injured reserve with a broken foot, playing only 18 games that year. Coming back from that injury in his third season, 1986-87, Jordan averaged 37.1 points a game, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, with not much of a supporting cast other than Charles Oakley, and a new coach in Doug Collins. So to get to a better comparison, you have to compare Lebron’s 3rd season to MJ’s 4th season, 1987-88.

Why? Because that is the year that Jordan’s core supporting cast of Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant joined the Bulls, creating the core that started the Bulls dynasty. Similarly, this year Lebron is joined by a supporting cast of scorer Larry Hughes, 3-point threat Donyell Marshall, and point guard & 3-point threat Damon Jones, all joining All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. So how did Jordan do in that pivotal year?

Simply dominated. Jordan scored 35 points a game, collected 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and an incredible 3.16 steals a game. He shot 53% from the field, and was named League MVP. The Bulls went 50-32, and went one series deep in the playoffs, beating, you guessed it, the Cavs in 5.

How will Lebron compare in this, perhaps his own breakout season? As ridiculous as this sounds, Lebron could blow right by those numbers. He already gets more assists and rebounds. And Lebron already shoots WAY better from 3-pt land (32% career) than Jordan did in his first 4 years (less than 20%). All this BEFORE he had any reliable scoring support other than Ilgauskas. Now, Lebron has a team around him that can score from virtually any point on the court. Defenses that used to be able to just key on Lebron can no longer do so.

Hold onto your hats, Cavs fans. Lebron is about to put on the show of a lifetime this year. History says so.

Lebron lays it out on Oprah

How many sports blogs you know cover Oprah? None? There’s one now. Damn straight!

Oprah was her lovable, head-waggin’ self, saying about all the money, the posse, all the cousins who come out of the woodwork, “I worry ’bout you!” asking Lebron about all the “girls standin’ outside the game with their panties on their heads…” Lebron was at his clean cut, good guy best. Lebron’s mom, and his girlfriend Savannah (who he’s dated for more than 3 years – how on earth can that thing last?!?!) were in the audience, and he was ready with the right answer to that one. “I seen ’em! But my mom taught me right from wrong.”

On the whole being the best basktball player of all time thing….Cavs management take note.

“I think long term, in basketball, the ultimate goal is to win the NBA championship,” Lebron says. “I got to. I have to. My life won’t be satisfied without winning an NBA championship.”

Kid’s got the money. Got the fame. Got the girls with the panties on their heads. He ain’t goin’ nowhere if he thinks Cleveland is where he’ll win that championship. That’s the challenge for Gilbert, Ferry, et. al.

How to make Cleveland a better place to live

Get the sports teams to win.

How funny is it, that when our sports teams are doing well our city instantly becomes a better place to live.

When the Browns were hot in the mid-80’s this town was pretty damn cool. I believe it also coincided with the height of the Flats era. Wasn’t Cleveland “the comeback city” during those Indians years in the mid-90’s? I got a feeling Lebron is going to make winters a bit more bearable.

Cavs going after Laettner?

Although the main target might be Jahidi White, the Miami Heat must be thinking we’ve got something against them. From Ohio.com (free registration required)

The Cavaliers have been in talks with free-agent center Jahidi White for much of the summer and hosted him on a visit last month. They’ve also been in touch with free-agent big men Christian Laettner and Andrew DeClercq among others. Several other free agents have come to Quicken Loans Arena to work out in recent weeks, among them former Utah Jazz center Ben Handlogten.

I wouldn’t mind Laettner. With a guy like him, and newly acquired Alan Henderson, there’d be a little of that missing, hard ass attitude off the bench.
