Browns vs. Colts previews

The Indianapolis Star notes that Romeo Crennel has a, shall we say, great record vs. Peyton Manning.

With Crennel pulling the defensive strings from 2001-04 and including the playoffs, the Patriots posted a 6-0 record against the Colts. They got physical with Manning’s receivers and forced Manning to move around or vacate the pocket, limiting him to nine touchdowns and forcing 10 interceptions.

The Dayton Daily News also focuses on the Crennel-Manning matchup…

“I don’t know that we got in his head; he just didn’t win the games,” Crennel said of Manning. “There’s been some discussion about the success I’ve had against the Colts, but I went back and looked and I wasn’t on the field for one play. The players play the game.”

And Colts president Bill Polian apparently loves Trent Dilfer…

He was perfect for the Baltimore Ravens when they had that great defense and great running game when they went to the Super Bowl. He’s the perfect quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. He won’t make mistakes. He won’t turn it over. He’ll hit the high-percentage passes. He’ll make the right audible.

Should we propose a trade to Polian? How about you take Dilfer, we’ll take Manning.

DawgBones analysis

A list of the good, the bad, and the unimpressive, including the following…

The run defense is still horrid. The Packers were not able to stick with the run, due to falling behind by 2 scores. Good thing for the Browns run defense. We realize that the Browns run a 3-4, but it seems more like a 1-4. Does any other linemen play besides DE Orpheus Roye?

We don’t seem to have any pass rush at all, either.

Indy’s new stadium

During this Sunday’s Browns-Colts game, you’ll probably hear a lot of talk about the Colts’ new stadium, which broke ground yesterday…a retractable roof, 63,000 capacity, multiple use facility. How’s it paid for?

Taxpayers in Central Indiana will pay for most of the project through tax increases. Marion County increased its hotel, car rental, and food-and-beverage taxes. Also, Hamilton, Boone, Hendricks, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties voted to increase their food-and-beverage taxes to help pay for it. The Colts will kick in $100 million.

I think it’ll be cool to see the Colts play outdoors at home…I move they keep that dome open in winter.

How to make Cleveland a better place to live

Get the sports teams to win.

How funny is it, that when our sports teams are doing well our city instantly becomes a better place to live.

When the Browns were hot in the mid-80’s this town was pretty damn cool. I believe it also coincided with the height of the Flats era. Wasn’t Cleveland “the comeback city” during those Indians years in the mid-90’s? I got a feeling Lebron is going to make winters a bit more bearable.

Browns offensive line already the best since 1992

Mary Kay Cabot’s article about why Trent Dilfer is buying a lot of big hungry linemen a lot of dinners lately…

The line, which dines out together at a different restaurant each week, took Dilfer’s guarantee to heart and did not allow a sack for the second straight week en route to a 26-24 upset in Green Bay. It marked the first time since 1992 the Browns line did not allow a sack in back-toback games.

I’ve always thought that if this team, or any team, could ever sort out their offensive line situation, they’d immediately be competitive. Indy has Dwight Freeney, who Browns center Jeff Faine thinks is the best pass rusher in the league. This week will be a big test.
