Garcia on a calliope

Round and round she goes, where it stops, not even Marriucci knows…

The inevitable transition from Joey Harrington to Jeff Garcia began in earnest Wednesday when Garcia took half the practice reps, but it’s more a source of exasperation than excitement. Here they go again. The quarterbacking-go-round bouncing to the sound of the calliope, circling to the refrain of “This one is finally it!”
It doesn’t matter that Garcia is both physically and competitively challenged. The light of redemption will shine upon him the same as it did for Harrington four years ago and every predecessor for the last 40 years. And then it’ll disappear in an instant.

What do you think the reception will be for Garcia if he plays on Sunday? What if he plays well and kicks our ass?

Dilfer on Harrington

The blind lead the blind in today’s Detroit Free Press….

“I think how he handles this adversity will define his career,” Browns quarterback Trent Dilfer said. “There’s been a lot of guys that kind of cowered under the pressure and went and hid somewhere, and they weren’t successful down the road. And if you can just man up to the pressure and take responsibility for it and let your teammates see you haven’t lost confidence, that will go a long way in the future.”

Quoting Trent Dilfer on Joey Harrington’s troubles is one of the more entertaining pieces of futility I’ve seen in a while.

“Give us the Cleveland plan”

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

“I’m ready to go to the NFL and to [commissioner Paul] Tagliabue and say, ‘Give us the Cleveland plan,'” Nagin added, referring to the league awarding Cleveland an expansion team almost immediately after the Browns moved to Baltimore after the 1995 season. “Whatever the Saints want to do, you let them leave, but they can’t take our logo, they can’t take our name, and you give us a promise to give us a franchise when this city’s back.”

How classless are the Saints owners? I thought Art Modell was the epitome of evil, but these guys are reaching a new low.

Detroit QB saga never ends

Can you name the last good Detroit Lions QB? I can’t. Whenever you start to fret about the Browns’ QB situation, just take a look at this litany of crapola.

It’s not like we don’t know how vicious this town can get toward its quarterbacks. Scott Mitchell knows it. Rodney Peete knows it. Andre Ware knows it. Charlie Batch knows it….For a while, Joey was the answer. Now Jeff Garcia is somehow the answer. Garcia, who has never played a down that counted for this franchise. Garcia, who is 35 years old. Garcia, who relies on mobility, yet is coming off a broken leg. Garcia, not even cleared to play this week, is somehow, already the answer.

The above-linked story has a great interview with Harrington, giving a unique view into the world of a kid who’s been a golden boy his whole life, and who is now in a real no win situation. I’d feel sorry for him, especially if he just had a dress code forced on him this week like Allen Iverson….but I just can’t bring a tear to my eye.
