Questions and answers

Kenny Roda from WKNR SportsTalk 850 will be writing a weekly blog on Cleveland Scores covering the sports world both locally and nationally. Check back often for his updates!

Q: The Browns are 1 of only 6 teams in the NFL with just 1 win. Who else is in this distinctive fraternity? Oakland, Tennessee, Miami, Detroit and Arizona. So of these 6 teams, who do you think will end up with the worst record and the first overall pick in the draft?

A: Oakland, because the Browns beat them this year and thus lose the tie breaker.

Q: Who or what is worse when you think of the Browns? The offensive line or offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon? I know that one really makes you think doesn’t it!?

A: As much as I want to fire Carthon, I have to admit the O-line is worse.

Q: Right now, do you think Randy Lerner cares more about his football team or his soccer team?

A: His soccer team, they’re scoring more than the Browns!

Q: Is Charlie Frye the quarterback of the future for the Browns?

A: The more I see of him, the more I doubt it.

Q: How would you rate the job that Browns GM Phil Savage has done so far?

A: Overall – “C-“…drafts – “C+”….free agents – “D”

Q: How would you rate the job that Browns head coach Romeo Crennel has done so far?

A: “C”…6 wins last year, not bad. But he better turn it around quickly this year or that grade becomes a solid “D”.

Q: Who is the Browns best player?

A: That’s an easy one. Punter Dave Zastudil

Q: Why do fans continue to pay big dollars to go down to the stadium and watch the Browns lose week after week?

A: This one I can honestly say I have no answer for. Please help me out and tell me why you all keep wasting your hard earned dollars on a team that has gone 18-41 at home since returning to the NFL in 1999. And their overall record now, counting this year’s 1-5 start, is 37-81. Why do you continue to pay for such punishment?

Forget the Browns; Tressel should stay at Ohio State

Tony Grossi speculates that Jim Tressel would consider leaving Ohio State for the head job with the Cleveland Browns. I just don’t see that happening. Tressel is a great college coach and he has his dream job. He could possibly retire some day as the greatest coach in Ohio State history, surpassing even Woody Hayes. Why would he leave that? He doesn’t strike me as one of those guys that feels the need to prove himself again by jumping to the pros.

That said, if he ever does leave Ohio State, of course I’d like to see him here in Cleveland. But I’m hoping he stays in Columbus.

Browns need to earn respect

The Cleveland Browns are slowly becoming a proud team. The week prior to the Carolina Panthers game, Braylon Edwards talked of his days at U of M and how he continually beat Ohio State’s Chris Gamble. Kellen Winslow confidently stated that if the Browns play to their potential, the offense would be unstoppable. Reuben Droughns is now answering a “calling out” by part time player Quincy Morgan.

IT’S ABOUT TIME. The Browns Backers have more history than most organizations. When Phil Savage was hired, one goal was to return Browns pride back to this city. I was amazed to read how overrated Gerard “always too fat” Warren was ragging on the Browns organization. And Quincy “I had one big catch in my career” Morgan was questioning this team’s heart. This is the type of crap that Cleveland needs to change. They need to answer the bell and ring Morgan’s.

Cleveland fans are proud and loud and it would do my heart good to send Denver packing with a nice “butt whipping” in our house. I fully expect Andra Davis to put Morgan on his back, if he plays more than special teams.

Browns preparing to resume action

Romeo Crennel has no plans to fire or demote offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon despite a struggling offensive unit. While he did say he might try to incorporate more of his own input into certain gameday calls, Romeo believes that it is going to have to be a team effort, coaches and players included, to get this thing turned around.

Crennel said all of the offensive coaches will continue to have input in the game plan.

“When they leave the meeting room, we want them to feel good about and to be on board with the plan,” he said.

However, the one thing that will be different is Crennel’s hands-on involvement with the offense as the week of practice goes along, and, more importantly, in the games.

“Some of that will be presence in the meetings, overriding plays if I need to, or calling a play if I have a feel for it,” Crennel said. “I’m going to insure that we follow the game plan to give us the best chance.”

Crennel on his feelings towards the coaching staff.

“I told them that I have confidence in every one of them. By working together, we can get this thing straightened out. That is what I believe. I may be crazy, stupid or naive, but that’s what I believe.

“I think I have good coaches. I have good kids on the team, I believe in them, and I’m going to give them a chance to do their job. We will try doing the things we do well and keep doing them in order to develop some consistency to win games.”

Now that we’ve all had a chance to rest and take a break from the Browns for a week, what do you all think about the outlook of the Browns for the rest of the season?

The bye week came at a good time and gave the entire team a chance to evaluate themselves and refocus before things had a chance of really spinning out of control. Let’s hope Romeo and crew have done everything in their power to fix the offensive woes because that has obviously been the area which has plagued us the most. That being said, don’t expect things to magically change overnight, either. The Browns have had a chance now to rethink some of their strategies but it’s hard to imagine them going out against Denver and completely turning it on. We are still in the middle of the building process whether you want to believe it or not and it’s going to take time.

The bye week also gave the team a chance to get healthy. Bodden and Baxter should be back to finally solidify our corner position and hopefully McGinest has healed from his calf injury.
