Sports talk soundtrack stuck in 80’s

Why does every sports talk show in Cleveland use the same 1980’s music for lead ins? You got the Van Halen, the George Thorogood, even the Don Henley!?!?! Don FUCKING Henley? Guys, this music is so old your kids probably never heard of them. Dirty Laundry was overplayed to death about three weeks after it came out, why would anyone ever want to hear it again? Let alone over and over. Have you guys listened to any music in the last 20 years?

Lebron about to go historic

How good will Lebron James be in the 2005-2006 season, his third year in the NBA? Let’s look at Michael Jordan’s early career for comparison.

Jordan spent most of his second season, 1985-86, on injured reserve with a broken foot, playing only 18 games that year. Coming back from that injury in his third season, 1986-87, Jordan averaged 37.1 points a game, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, with not much of a supporting cast other than Charles Oakley, and a new coach in Doug Collins. So to get to a better comparison, you have to compare Lebron’s 3rd season to MJ’s 4th season, 1987-88.

Why? Because that is the year that Jordan’s core supporting cast of Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant joined the Bulls, creating the core that started the Bulls dynasty. Similarly, this year Lebron is joined by a supporting cast of scorer Larry Hughes, 3-point threat Donyell Marshall, and point guard & 3-point threat Damon Jones, all joining All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. So how did Jordan do in that pivotal year?

Simply dominated. Jordan scored 35 points a game, collected 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and an incredible 3.16 steals a game. He shot 53% from the field, and was named League MVP. The Bulls went 50-32, and went one series deep in the playoffs, beating, you guessed it, the Cavs in 5.

How will Lebron compare in this, perhaps his own breakout season? As ridiculous as this sounds, Lebron could blow right by those numbers. He already gets more assists and rebounds. And Lebron already shoots WAY better from 3-pt land (32% career) than Jordan did in his first 4 years (less than 20%). All this BEFORE he had any reliable scoring support other than Ilgauskas. Now, Lebron has a team around him that can score from virtually any point on the court. Defenses that used to be able to just key on Lebron can no longer do so.

Hold onto your hats, Cavs fans. Lebron is about to put on the show of a lifetime this year. History says so.

Clevelander threatening Jeter?

This is fucked up…

FBI special agent Scott Wilson, speaking by phone from Cleveland, confirmed the bureau’s probe Monday, saying “we have an ongoing open investigation into racially threatening letters to Jeter and others across the country.” He declined to comment further….In an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Jeter said that he and his sister were taunted for being bi-racial while growing up in Michigan. But the soft-spoken, cool-headed Yankee said that he has never heard any racial epithets from the fans at Yankee Stadium in his 11 seasons as a Yankee.

The threats have been traced to the Cleveland area. “The wording is very similar to letters that have been sent to other prominent people across the country,” special agent Scott Wilson of the FBI in Cleveland told the Daily News. The mail, postmarked from cities in northeastern Ohio and Pennsylvania, criticized interracial relationships and directed the men to end such relationships “or they’re going to be castrated, shot or set on fire.”

St. Ignatius and St. Edward, two Roman Catholic high schools in Cleveland with well-known sports programs, received threatening letters addressed to student athletes last fall.

If the guy writing that hate mail is reading this blog, let me tell you something, asshole. You are a disgrace to Cleveland, and you’re going to deserve everything that you’re gonna get when they find your sorry ass.

Scout – Keep Bryant away from Edwards

An unnamed scout or player personnel director at ESPN warns Len Pasquarelli…

“The Browns need to keep [veteran wide receiver] Antonio Bryant away from the kid, [first-round wideout] Braylon Edwards. Bryant has become a good player but he’s still immature and he and Edwards both drew [taunting] flags Sunday that really hurt the offense. If Bryant ever grows up, he could be a good player, but he does [stupid] stuff, and you don’t want it rubbing off on Edwards, believe me.”

Oh, so THAT’S why both of them acted like ASSES yesterday. This is so NOT Crennel’s style, and if I were those two guys, I’d be avoiding Romeo right about now.

Demons raised

How quickly the Tribe goes from chosen team to cursed

Black cats, broken mirrors and baseballs lost in the sun fall into the same general category for those expecting something to go amiss for the Indians in the final week of the season.

When Grady dropped that ball, and then failed to pick it up fast enough, every demon of Cleveland sports seemed to be raised from the dead in one instant. I am officially spooked.
