Ohio State dominates Illinois – computer doesn’t care

I can’t decide which is the bigger outrage…the fact that the Buckeyes lost two games they should have won this year, or the fact that the BCS is such a ridiculous way to decide a national champion.

This debate over BCS vs. playoffs is not one I pay much attention to. But right about this time of year, the complete insanity of having some formula decide rankings of football teams really starts to grate. As of this weekend, the only team to really challenge Texas was the Buckeyes. Who wouldn’t want to see a rematch in a playoff? It would probably be the most watched game in the last 30 years. Instead…some guy is doing data entry right now, another guy is packing up the Texas road uniforms for Pasadena, and another guy is counting how much money goes to both teams. That’s how we decide the national champion?

There are 12 minutes left in the OSU game as of the moment I press the “publish” button on this post, and the score is 40-2, Buckeyes. The BCS takes almost every ounce of air out of such a victory.

Tribe and Belliard

ESPN has a good story on how Ronnie Belliard went from just some guy to getting his $4 million option picked up for next season.

The Indians didn’t expect Belliard to develop into one of the league’s premier middle infielders when they signed the chunky free agent in December 2003. They figured he was a temporary fix at the position while Brandon Phillips developed in the minors or until they found someone else.

Does anyone care about Brandon Phillips anymore? Where is he? Does anyone think we’ll see him play next year?

BIG Browns punter news = pathetic

Remember when the Browns brightest spot on the roster was punter Chris Gardocki? How every time he stepped on the field we were reminded that he’s never had a punt blocked, and what a great stat that was? When your team stinks as much as the Browns have for the past, umm…forever…you cling to stats like those of the punter.

Which is why this news that the Browns bring a new punter into camp makes it to ClevelandScores. What else am I supposed to write about? Reuben Droughns DUI again? Another quote from Trent Dilfer about how tough this league is, how bad his last game was, or how he can relate to Ryan Leaf? Punter stories….that’s the state of Browns football in Cleveland.

Reality check in San Antonio

About the best thing you could say about tonight’s loss in San Antonio is that the Cavs were supposed to lose. Getting thumped on the road by the NBA champions is probably the best medicine for any overconfidence that Cavs may suffer from after their 1-0 start. Early on, the Cavs looked like they were going to make a game of it, but something happened on the way to Mike Brown’s dream defense…the defense stopped.

Tony Parker just ran completely unchecked through the Cavs defense. Too many open jumpers, too many uncontested layups. The Cavs bench, which delivered big time in the opener against New Orleans, was absent. The rhtyhm the Cavs established with Z and Gooden in the post early just evaporated. And Bud Shaw is probably patting himself on the back….Lebron appeared just a bit too enamored with the 3-pointer. Brown took Lebron out with 7.20 left in the 4th, Lebron took off his head band, and that was that.

As good a beat down as the Cavs put on New Orleans in Game 1, that’s how good the Spurs took it to the Cavs tonight. Lesson administered.
