BUCKEYE NATION ARRIVES

The Ohio State Buckeyes continue to be the hottest ticket in town. The Buckeye faithful invaded Austin, Texas in week two, raising ticket prices, filling hotels and even renting out the Longhorn basketball arena. This type of hoopla is expected in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend.

The game between Iowa and Ohio State is the biggest game of the week and everyone in the nation will be watching. College Game day is there and the game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff.

This weekend is why college football is so exciting and why Buckeye Nation leads the country in supporting THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY.

Is Laurinaitis as good as Hawk?

James Laurinaitis is finally in the spotlight. During his childhood years, Jim was known as the son of an “action hero”. Joe “the animal” Laurinaitis is his father and one half of the “Legion of Doom”. Jim was a major recruit for most colleges, but you couldn’t read an article without reference to his father.

Laurinaitis’s first season at Ohio State, he played behind a trio of linebackers that may go down as the best in Buckeye history. The focal point of the season came when Jim had to fill in for Bobby Carpenter, who broke his ankle on the first play of the Michigan game. He played well and set up high expectations for this season.

The Ohio State defense is playing well, but Laurinaitis has started the year with numbers already drawing comparisons to superstar A. J. Hawk. He lead the Buckeyes with 13 tackles against Texas, and has a couple interceptions. If the Buckeyes want to make it to the National Championship, they will need Laurinaitis to continue to have an All American season. If he does continue at this pace, he won’t be the son of an “action hero”; Joe will be the father of a superstar.

Smith shouldn’t change his ways

The Ohio State Buckeyes excelled all last year on Troy Smith running and throwing the ball. This year Smith has relied solely on the pass and has almost avoided running the ball. This has been successful so far this year, but I believe Coach Tressel and Troy shouldn’t forget what made them who they are today.

Last year, Smith would run and pass; this confused the defense and opened passing and running lanes. I think it’s critical the offense implements some option plays back in the scheme. The strength of this team is the flexibility and that is what will lead us to the title game.

FIRE Carthon, FIRE Carthon, FIRE Carthon

The Cleveland Browns started the football season looking worse than you could even imagine. They had missed blocks, threw interceptions, committed penalties and still had the ball in New Orleans territory with 2 minutes left and a chance to win.

I’ve watched hundreds of football games in my life and have never seen a game where the play calling was so terrible that you couldn’t even evaluate the players. I witnessed four quarters of Browns football yesterday and couldn’t tell if Charlie Frye played well, the offensive line could block or even if New Orleans is that good.

I’ve always believed in giving a guy a fair chance before taking him out, but Maurice Carthon is clueless when it comes to calling plays and evaluating talent. We ran fullback sweeps on third and one, we ran a draw on second and twenty and last but not least, we put Terrelle Smith split out wide in a five receiver set.

Romeo Crennel needs to recognize quickly that Carthon doesn’t get it. We have two star receivers in Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards and Carthon isn’t running plays to get them the ball. We have a 1200 yard back in Rueben Droughns, and he’s on the bench more than in the game. I hope Phil Savage steps in and puts an end to this misery.

Lastly, the Bob who continues to share opinons on these blogs, please put the initial of your last name so that people can tell us apart. It will help avoid a lot of confusion. I have been getting grief or compliments for things I didn’t even write. You have good insight, take credit for it.

The Buckeyes beat down Texas

The Ohio State Buckeyes proved to the nation that they’re worthy of the number one ranking last night. The offense had more weapons than Texas could handle and Troy Smith showed why he’s a top Heisman candidate. Smith led the Buckeyes to a late first half touchdown that gave Ohio State the momentum they kept for the entire second half.

If Ted Ginn wasn’t beating the Longhorn defense deep, Anthony Gonzalez was open over the middle. Smith was very calm and made all the right decisions. The Buckeye defense was also a pleasant surprise. After looking shaky early, the defense settled down and didn’t give up a single point the whole second half.
