Buckeyes need to stay focused

The Ohio State Buckeyes need to concentrate on each game this season. If this team starts concentrating at the match with “that team up north”, they could find themselves with one lose they didn’t plan on. The Bucks have enough weapons to offset one player having a bad game, but Coach Jim Tressel wants every player to improve each week.

Since the first year Coach Tressel took the helm as the Buckeyes head coach, he stressed this game as the most important game each year. He impressed the Buckeye Nation with his comments of preparing for this game a little each week. Tressel now faces the challenge of keeping the players focused for the next six weeks.

The Buckeyes have proved they have one of the top teams in the nation, now it’s time to prove they can stay grounded till that “team of north” comes to visit.

Indians already making changes

The Cleveland Indians wasted no time in picking up the options of Jake Westbrook and Casey Blake. This news coming along with the not surprising news that Aaron Boone has been released. Westbrook is a strong pitcher that Cleveland should contemplate signing to a multi-year deal. Blake came back strong this year after struggling all of last season.

The Indians will now concentrate on building their bullpen to make a run at the pennant next year. This search will hopefully be done with a new manager.

Wedge should be replaced

The Cleveland Indians finished the season on a high, but useless note. The Indians started this year with tons of promise and expectations. The fans watched helplessly as manager Eric Wedge, coached this team out of contention.

I believe Wedge is a poor judge of talent and a bad game day coach. Last year, we watched as the Tribe refused to bunt and advance runners and the playoffs slipped away from them. This year, we managed to eliminate the playoffs early and turned 2006 into a rebuilding season.

I do understand that General Manager Mark Shapiro and the Dolan’s tight wallets should receive some of the blame, but this team still has the players to make a run for the pennant.

I’m sure some fans will debate this point. I just want you to answer one simple question. Should the Indians have been in the playoffs one of the last two seasons?

Browns, Frye show courage

The Cleveland Browns used passing, running and defense to rally past the Oakland Raiders and earn their first victory. The Browns started slow and had some questionable play calling in the first half. This resulted in an early 21-3 deficit.

At the end of the second quarter, the offense started to click and the defense began to stop the run. Charlie Frye, although still making some questionable decisions, lead this team to their first victory. In the fourth quarter, after a terrible spot by the referee, the Raiders went for it on fourth and one and Orpheus Roye and the rest of the Browns defense came up with a big stop.

This win, although very satisfying, makes Carthon’s miscues against Baltimore even more aggravating.

Buckeyes make a statement

The Ohio State Buckeyes played on primetime last night and showed everyone in the country that they’re the best team in the land. The convincing and surprisingly easy victory in Iowa has left many people shaking their heads. Troy Smith and company displayed numerous weapons and ways to score.

The defense, not dominant, was good enough to shut down Drew Tate and the wide open Hawkeye offense. In the first half, Iowa was running the ball on the Buckeyes, but the second half proved to be a different story. The defense made critical stops and turnovers to preserve the victory.

The Ohio State Buckeyes continue to put distance between them and the rest of the teams in the college polls. I’m still amazed how some voters can put in “homer” ballots for West Virginia.
