Troy Smith for the Heisman

That’s where last night’s performance puts Troy Smith…right in the mix for 2006. (hey, that rhymes!) I’ve been pretty hard on the kid this year, and some of the coaching decisions around QB (especially that Texas game…ouch), but Smith is delivering, he’s getting better every game, and if he performs on the same level as he did in the Fiesta Bowl throughout next season, the Buckeyes will be national championship contenders.

I just hope he stays out of trouble….

Holmes to the NFL

Not a big surprise. After the offensive performance by the Buckeyes last night, pretty sure it won’t hurt Ohio State all that much next year. Tressel declared Santonio a first round pick…agree? Not sure about that on my end. Also, is it classy to announce you’re going to enter the NFL draft on the field, right after a bowl victory?

Ohio State thumps Notre Dame

The Buckeyes overwelmed the Fighting Irish today in an impressive 34-20 victory. Turnovers and missed field goals made the game closer than it should have been, but there was no doubt at the end of the game as to which team was better.

The Buckeyes showed that they can dominate an opponent with their speed. Ted Ginn lived upto the preseason hype with some amazing plays, and Troy Smith established himself as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner for next season with another big time performance. His ability to elude the rush and throw on the run makes him one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the country.

The game also proved again that a good defense can stop a good offense. Notre Dame’s offense looked unstoppable all season, and they opened with a great drive, but the Buckeye defense shut them down the rest of the way.

Finally, Jim Tressel wins the big one again. He’s 4-1 against Michigan, and now he’s 4-1 in bowl games. Charlie Weis might be a great coach, but right now there are few college coaches who can claim to be in the same class as Jim Tressel.

Rock bottom

Hard to believe it’s come to this with Maurice Clarett; potentially perpetrating an armed robbery. Worst part….he may have been heading back into football as early as today.

Before Sunday’s incident, Clarett was negotiating a deal and was likely going to sign with an NFL team on Monday, Josh Luchs, one of Clarett’s agents, told ESPN The Magazine’s Tom Friend. Clarett was expected to be allocated to NFL Europe if he signed, Friend reported.

Someone needs to make sure this kid gets help, and it may now fall to the justice system.

Carpenter might play

After breaking his leg. Modern medicine is a marvel, eh? What do you guys think of this….would you take Carpenter with the first pick? Some folks this year said he’s actually the best linebacker at Ohio State…not sure I buy that. I have this recurring dream that the Browns are able to get A.J. Hawk in the first round, and Bobby Carpenter slips to the second round because of the injury, both end up in Cleveland.
