BREAKING NEWS – Sox not choking

Just getting beat, according to FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal…by the Indians.

The Indians rank first in the league in ERA; the Sox are fourth. The Indians rank fourth in runs; the Sox are tied for eighth. The Sox hold a slight edge in defensive efficiency, a statistic that measures the percentage of balls in play that are converted into outs. But overall, the Sox and Indians rank 2-3 in the majors behind the A’s.

Maybe us Clevelanders just simply can’t accept that the Tribe is this good.

Browns offensive line already the best since 1992

Mary Kay Cabot’s article about why Trent Dilfer is buying a lot of big hungry linemen a lot of dinners lately…

The line, which dines out together at a different restaurant each week, took Dilfer’s guarantee to heart and did not allow a sack for the second straight week en route to a 26-24 upset in Green Bay. It marked the first time since 1992 the Browns line did not allow a sack in back-toback games.

I’ve always thought that if this team, or any team, could ever sort out their offensive line situation, they’d immediately be competitive. Indy has Dwight Freeney, who Browns center Jeff Faine thinks is the best pass rusher in the league. This week will be a big test.

Browns face #1…

…in this week’s ESPN Power Ranking – the Colts, who get this comment…

It has to be a huge boost to the Colts to know they can win a game when Peyton Manning throws for only 122 yards.

Browns are listed 28th. Before we won Sunday, I’d be worried about a total blowout. Now it might just be a minor blowout?

Cavs going after Laettner?

Although the main target might be Jahidi White, the Miami Heat must be thinking we’ve got something against them. From Ohio.com (free registration required)

The Cavaliers have been in talks with free-agent center Jahidi White for much of the summer and hosted him on a visit last month. They’ve also been in touch with free-agent big men Christian Laettner and Andrew DeClercq among others. Several other free agents have come to Quicken Loans Arena to work out in recent weeks, among them former Utah Jazz center Ben Handlogten.

I wouldn’t mind Laettner. With a guy like him, and newly acquired Alan Henderson, there’d be a little of that missing, hard ass attitude off the bench.

Mariotti on the Tribe

Chicago Sun Times columnist and regular on ESPN’s Around The Horn, Jay Mariotti, hears nothing but gagging coming out of the White Sox, and sees a lot to like about the Tribe.

Whether the Sox go on to finish the biggest regular-season fold in baseball history or somehow do a backdoor slider into the playoffs, it should be obvious now that the rampaging Indians are a much better team and are worthier of the American League Central title.

Long term?

Whatever the final outcome, the Sox should be mortified by the presence of the Tribe. Anyone who thinks Williams has laid groundwork for long-term divisional success doesn’t understand the golden future of the Indians, who have the same championship potential of their ’90s clubs. GM Mark Shapiro downsized the big-boom era for a kiddie movement, and his daring plan worked fantastically.
