The morning after

The Browns got their top-rated player in Braylon Edwards, a promising defensive back in Brodney Pool and their apparent quarterback of the future in Charlie Frye. Terry Pluto from the Beacon Journal says years from now, Browns fans may be able to point to this draft as the day the team pulled itself out of a six-year funk.

Tony Grossi from the Plain Dealer says the Browns caught a star in Braylon Edwards and GM Phil Savage stuck to his gameplan throughout the draft.

The PD’s Bud Shaw says Savage passed on trading down in order to grab a top-talent like Edwards with the third pick.

The ABJ’s Scott Fagerstrom says getting the playmaking Edwards at #3, where he also was the best available player, was definitely the right choice.

Patrick McManamon from the Beacon Journal says getting selected by the Browns was a dream come true for second-round pick Brodney Pool.

For third-round pick Charlie Frye, there’s no place like home, reports the Plain Dealer’s Joe Maxse.

The ABJ’s Marla Ridenour reports that Frye became the highest-drafted player in Akron history when the Browns selected him in the third round with the 67th overall choice.

Lee cruises against Seattle

In his second-straight impressive outing, lefty Cliff Lee shut out the Mariners on four hits and five strikeouts in seven innings, leading the Tribe to a 5-2 win. Bob Howry coughed up two runs in the ninth without recording an out but Bob Wickman actually put out a fire instead of causing one, bailing out Howry by recording the final three outs to notch his fifth save. The Indians look for the sweep in Seattle Sunday afternoon at 4:05.

Maurice Clarett closes out the third

There was some talk that he wouldn’t even be drafted while others said Maurice Clarett would not be selected until the fifth or sixth round. But with the final pick in the third round, the Denver Broncos chose the former Ohio State running back Saturday night. Denver has a couple young backs already in place (Tatum Bell and Quentin Griffin) so Clarett probably won’t see the field much in 2005, but if there’s a system he could be successful in, it’s Denver’s. I’m not surprised that the Broncos were the team to take a chance on Clarett, but I am surprised that they took him so early.

More on Frye

Man, the more you read about Charlie Frye, the more you start to wonder how he fell all the way to the Browns in the third round today.

In part one of a two-part series on ClevelandBrowns.com, Zac Jackson explains how Frye’s ability to learn and excel in a new offense during his senior year at Akron opened the eyes of plenty of NFL scouts and GMs.

In part two of his article, Jackson says Frye continued to impress during his pro day workouts and subsequent interviews, especially Browns general manager Phil Savage and director of player personnel Bill Rees.

Marla Ridenour from the ABJ covered one of Frye’s pre-draft workouts in which he answered questions about his so-called lack of arm strenth.

Ridenour also discussed how Frye’s hard work paid off during his collegiate career and in the weeks leading up to the draft.
