Indians destroy Detroit

The Indians regrouped from a frustrating offensive performance on Sunday and let loose on the Tigers Monday afternoon. The Tribe blew out Detroit 10-2 with the help of a big third inning. Casey Blake started the explosion with a solo home run as the Indians went on to score six in the inning. Eduardo Perez was perfect on the day, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI. Paul Byrd rebounded from his first two starts, allowing only two runs in seven innings as the Indians were able to tie the four-game series.

“Byrd threw good today,” said Joel Skinner, who filled in for Eric Wedge because he was in Cleveland for the birth of his daughter. “He had a lot of strikes and his command was better than it had been in his last two starts. With the big lead he was able to be aggressive and throw with confidence.”

Eduardo Perez continues to impress with his ability to pound left-handed pitching. Jose Hernandez, who was brought in last year to do the same thing, didn’t work out too well but hopefully Shapiro got it right this time with Perez.

Cavaliers fall to Wizards

The Cavaliers faced a possible first-round playoff opponent Sunday but came up on the losing end as the Washington Wizards defeated the Cavs 102-94. With the victory, the Wizards clinched a playoff berth. The Cavaliers fell behind early and with not much to play for, Mike Brown seized the opportunity to scale back some of his starters’ minutes. LeBron James finished with 17 points in only 30 minutes on the floor. Despite losing the season series to the Wizards 3-1, LeBron doesn’t seem concerned.

“It doesn’t make us worried,” James said. “We know if we face them in the first round or face them later in the playoffs we’ll be ready for them.”

Despite the loss, it was nice to see LeBron get some rest. Now let’s try to put something together the final two games and get some momentum for the playoffs.

Tigers win pitcher’s duel

Chris Shelton hit a solo home run in the fourth and as it turns out, that’s all the Tigers needed to beat the Indians Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Tribe wasted a stellar performance by Cliff Lee, who went 7 1/3 innings. Indians hitters could not solve Tiger starter Mike Maroth and only mustered up four hits the entire ballgame. They got a few chances with runners in scoring position but were unable to take advantage.

“He just kept the ball down, did a good job, made his pitches,” said Cleveland’s Grady Sizemore, who went 0-2 with a walk against Maroth. “We didn’t do a good job making adjustments, so we helped him out a little bit.”

Maroth is in the Kenny Rogers and Mark Buerhle mold. These soft-tossing lefties always seem to give Tribe hitters trouble. Offensively, the Indians like to be aggressive at the plate and adjusting to these types of pitchers has proven challenging for the Tribe.

Buckeyes look forward to next year

It was only a couple years ago; Ohio State’s basketball program was spinning downward and in the news for allegations and possible suspensions. Jim O’Brien had taken the Buckeyes from the final four to an embarrassing low, as the papers were loaded with infractions and bad press for the Bucks program.
Ohio State fired O’Brien and hired the “Jim Tressel of basketball” in Thad Matta. Matta is a hard working, clean cut, emotional leader that has brought this program back to its feet in record time. The last two years, the Buckeyes have been playing solid basketball and exceeding every expectation, including capturing a Big Ten Championship this season. Coach Matta’s incoming class is loaded with talent and ranked as one of the best to ever hit the Ohio State hardwood. As we head into summer, it’s nice to see this talent from other states receiving all their accolades as they head to Columbus next season. There was a time when Ohio State couldn’t touch a recruit out of Indiana; with Matta those times have changed.

Buckeye player injured

The Ohio State football spring practices have started and the Buckeyes have their first injury. Tyson Gentry, a 20 year old walk on, was injured during a passing drill.
Gentry is listed as a punter, but had plans to try out for receiver this season. He left the field in an ambulance as he complained of losing feeling in his body.
