ESPN’s Bill Simmons rips LeBron James – Is he right?

Bill Simmons asks some tough questions about LeBron.

To LeBron James, who coasted through the Skills Challenge on All-Star Saturday and played the All-Star Game with the uplifting, charismatic intensity of a female porn star trying to break one of those “most male partners in one afternoon” records. Could we end up putting him in the “Too Much, Too Soon” Pantheon some day? Will he become the basketball version of Eddie Murphy, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson and every other celeb who became famous too quickly and eventually burned out?

Here’s what I know. I had four conversations with connected NBA people over the weekend that centered around the same themes: LeBron isn’t playing nearly as hard as he did last season; it looks like his only goal right now is to get his coach fired; he’s regressing as a basketball player (especially his passing skills and his shot selection); he made a huge mistake firing his agent and turning his career over to his buddies back home (all of whom are in over their heads); he was a much bigger problem during the Olympics than anyone realized; he doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself anymore; he has an overrated sense of his own worth and his own impact in the sports world (as witnessed by the ESPN interview last week when he answered the “What are your goals?” question with two words: “Global icon”); he’s been protected by magazine fluff pieces and buddy-buddy TV interviews for far too long; he doesn’t have the same relentless drive to keep dominating everyone like Wade and Kobe have; and basically, we’re much closer to LeBron re-enacting the career arc of Martina Hingis, Eric Lindros and Junior Griffey than anyone realizes. This will evolve into THE dominant NBA story of the next two months. You watch.

LeBron can quiet Simmons and all of his critics with a great performance in the playoffs, but there is no doubt he needs to step things up. His recent play does not match the hype.

Cavs’ slide continues

The Cavaliers were subject to a rare home loss as they fell 87-71 to the Detroit Pistons Thursday night. LeBron led the Cavs with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists but it wasn’t enough as the Cavs got blown out in the fourth quarter. They were outscored 30-16 down the stretch and Cleveland’s inconsistencies continue.

It’s been three straight losses now and the Cavs need to figure something out. They’ll have a chance at redemption when they welcome Orlando to the Q on Saturday and it is imperative that they get back on track. These guys have not looked like the Cavs from last season.

Nets nip Cavs

The Cavaliers just can’t seem to solve their road woes. They were defeated 113-111 by the New Jersey Nets, dropping their road record to 3-8 on the season. Vince Carter, who finished with 38 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, outstaged LeBron, who led the Cavs with 37 points and 8 assists. The Wine and Gold fell victim to a cold shooting second and third quarter and nearly mounted a comeback but it wasn’t meant to be.

Until this team figures out how to win on the road, it’s going to be a long season.

Cavs find success on the home court

The Cavaliers almost gave up a 13-point second half lead but were able to survive in their 104-101 win against Charlotte at the Q. They allowed the Bobcats to get within a couple of points in the final minutes but a key steal and a couple of free throws by Larry Hughes sealed the victory. LeBron James led the Cavaliers with 22 points and had eight rebounds and seven assists. Anderson Varejao once again was solid off the bench with 16 points and 10 boards.

The Cavs continue to look strong and get the job done at home, where they are 10-2 this season. With the exception of the run given up to the Bobcats in the second half, the Cavaliers didn’t look all that bad. They played very well in the first half and it was finally a great sight to see Hughes back in the starting lineup. With as tight as the Central looks right now, a run of five or six straight wins by the Cavs would be a big boost for the team.
