BIG Browns punter news = pathetic

Remember when the Browns brightest spot on the roster was punter Chris Gardocki? How every time he stepped on the field we were reminded that he’s never had a punt blocked, and what a great stat that was? When your team stinks as much as the Browns have for the past, umm…forever…you cling to stats like those of the punter.

Which is why this news that the Browns bring a new punter into camp makes it to ClevelandScores. What else am I supposed to write about? Reuben Droughns DUI again? Another quote from Trent Dilfer about how tough this league is, how bad his last game was, or how he can relate to Ryan Leaf? Punter stories….that’s the state of Browns football in Cleveland.

Droughns apologizes, will play

Is it just me, or do we tend to make a WAY bigger deal out of these things than they deserve? The guy got a DUI, but he blew 0.08, which a couple years ago would have been legal. And he was going 50 in a 35…yeah, none of us do that. Ever. I’m glad the Browns say it won’t affect his playing time.

Frye – McNair comparison

Hmmm. Interesting. Steve McNair was tutored under very Dilfer-esque Chris Chandler.

“I said at the time that it would take him two years to learn the league, two years to play, and in his fifth year, we’d be in the Super Bowl,” Titans General Manager Floyd Reese said in an interview on Tuesday. Sometimes a plan works out. The Titans made it to the Super Bowl in McNair’s fifth season. McNair made two starts at the end of his rookie season. He made four in his second year. In his third season, McNair started every game at the age of 24.

That’s the best argument I’ve heard for sucking it up and sticking with Dilfer.

Pluto on Frye

Good podcast by ABJ’s Terry Pluto. He makes a good point on potentially starting Frye this week at home against Tennessee. If you give Dilfer one more chance, and he has another bad game, and you want to make a change next week, Frye’s first start would be against Pittsburgh, at Pittsburgh. That’s not a good situation for a rookie Browns QB’s first start.
