Pluto puts Carthon in his place

Maurice Carthon made some stupid comments in New Orleans about how the Cleveland media criticized his play-calling, and how this was the same media that ran Bill Belichick out of town.

Terry Pluto decided to give Mr. Carthon a history lesson about what really happened with Belichick in Cleveland, and then went on to point out some of the serious shortcomings in Carthon’s performance this season as offensive coordinator. Great column.

Browns win . . . . ESPN’s Misery Index

This is the only thing the Browns have won lately:

Lousy teams, painful losses, a hijacked team. Sheesh. The only thing missing from the Browns’ misery is Kathy Bates’ crushing their ankles with a sledgehammer.

We all know that the front office is a mess, but I’m still encouraged that Lerner decided to keep Phil Savage.

Browns players in Denver – who cares

You knew it was coming. Mary Kay Cabot couldn’t help herself. She had to rehash the long-running story of the four Browns defensive linemen who are now playing for Denver in the playoffs.

Frankly, I could care less. These guys generally had solid seasons, but they didn’t set the world on fire. The reasons behind the success of the Broncos defense do not start with these players. Having a solid offense that controls the ball is a huge factor, and there are some pretty good players playing behind this group.

By any measurement, Gerard Warren and Courtney Brown are still busts after this season as well.

Phil Savage did what he had to do. Romeo Crennel wanted to switch to a 3-4 defense, and some of these players didn’t fit. Warren had to go given his history, and Brown wanted too much money. Savage was able to land Rueben Droughns for Ekuban and Myers, and that alone justifies the purge. Droughns was our best players last season, and you can build an offense around a tough back like Droughns.

I’m glad they’re gone. Now let’s get back to the business of rebuilding the Browns.

Trouble in Cincy

After a great regular season, Bengals fans are left with serious indigestion heading into the offseason following the painful loss against the Steelers. They have to deal with Carson Palmer’s serious knee injury, and now there are rumors spreading around the web that Chad Johnson got into a brawl with wide receivers coach Hugh Jackson during half time. Johnson has denied the report, but sources close to the team say something happened. Stay tuned.
