Last-second field goal gives Browns a win

Yes, it was only the third preseason game and it was against Buffalo, one of the league’s worst teams, but the Browns are starting to put together some positive things. They won their second straight preseason game as they defeated the Bills 20-17 on a 35-yard field goal by Jeff Chandler as time expired.

The Browns wasted no time putting points on the board. On their opening drive, they drove down the field and Charlie Frye hit TE Steve Heiden on a 2-yard pass in the back of the endzone to put the Brownies up 7-0. Frye, who was 12-for-16 for 76 yards and 1 TD, threw the ball extremely well as he and the first-teamers played all of the first half and the first drive of the third quarter.

Peerless Price burned cornerback Ralph Brown on a 54-yard touchdown reception and the Bills went into halftime holding a 10-7 lead. In the fourth quarter, Joshua Cribbs caught a pass from Derek Anderson for a score as the Browns regained their seven-point advantage. The Bills responded with a touchdown of their own when Lionel Gates ran it in from three yards out to tie it up. Derek Anderson, who finished 4-for-7 for 83 yards and 1 TD, orchestrated the two-minute drill and led his offense down the field to set up the game-winning field goal.

Browns add a center

The Cleveland Browns continue to add centers to their roster this season. Today, the Browns signed Lennie Friedman for a 2007 conditional draft pick. Friedman, who has played in about 65 NFL games, will definitely bring experience to this position.

Lennie played in 10 games for the Redskins last season before being let go. He played one game for the Bears as a reserve.

Edwards to play this week?

It is possible Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards could get some reps in this week’s game at Buffalo.

“We’ll have to see how the practice week goes,” Crennel said after the morning practice as the Browns went through the last of their two-a-day sessions. “If the week goes well and he is feeling good, we might have to give him one or two reps to see if he can move around against some different competition, in a more competitive situation.”

After suffering his ACL injury last season, Braylon has been making a quick recovery and, from all indications, it looks like he will be ready to go by the opener against the Saints. For him to get on the field this upcoming Saturday would be another huge step for him as he nears the end of his rehab process. Edwards is inching closer and closer to full form but he must get a feel for game speed first and foremost. It would be beneficial for him to get a few opportunities against Buffalo just to get his feet wet again and his body used to contact in a game situation.

If you would have said Braylon Edwards would be suiting up to play in the third preseason game, let alone the opener, I would have thought you were crazy. Pegged at first to return around Week 6 or so, it’s amazing he’s back so soon.

Browns will play youth

The Cleveland Browns have completed two pre-preseason games this year. The main thing General Manager Phil Savage and Coach Romeo Crennel are making clear is draft picks are going to play or at least get a chance to compete.

In the past, the Browns organization has been known to play veterans and free agents, while the rookies would take time adapting to the system. Savage believes that rookies should come prepared to play in the NFL, and the best way to gain experience is on the field.

The one major surprise has to be Jerome Harrison at running back. He rushed for over 1900 yards in college, but scouts felt the lack of defense in the Pac Ten attributed to his numbers. The ability that Harrison has displayed is the main reason Cleveland is shopping Lee Suggs.

The Browns have to be pleased with the production of these rookies so far this season. If these types of performances continue, Cleveland will be deeper on both sides of the ball than originally expected

Suggs traded to…no, scratch that

Remember Lee Suggs, the fragile former Browns running back dealt to the Jets yesterday? Well, he’s a fragile current Browns running back again after reportedly failing his physical:

Running back Lee Suggs failed his physical with the New York Jets on Tuesday, voiding his trade from Cleveland.

Suggs, who has had myriad injuries throughout his four-year career, was brought in to help bolster the group of backs struggling without the injured Curtis Martin. Now he is headed back to the Browns. Cornerback Derrick Strait, who was sent to Cleveland in the deal made Monday, returns to New York.

“We have a whole series of tests that we do, and we were very thorough with the process,” Jets coach Eric Mangini said. “He just didn’t pass those tests. … Each team has a criteria they set up that they believe is what’s important and what’s needed to be competitive. I’m very comfortable with the tests we have set up.”

It’s obvious the Browns aren’t all that interested in retaining Suggs, so maybe they’ll just flat out release him now.
