After all the news reports that detailed how Maurice Carthon was unable to work well with players and with other coaches like Jeff Davidson, there is some reason for optimism that a competent coach like Davidson could make something positive happen with the offense. On the other hand, you have to wonder what the hell Crennel was doing while all this stuff was happening. How could he possibly have stuck with Carthon for so long?
Crennel better hope that Davidson can get the offense going.
Jim Donovan just reported that Maurice Carthon has been fired by the Browns. According to Donovan, owner Randy Lerner and GM Phil Savage convinced head coach Romeo Crennel to make the change.
It’s the right move. Carthon was a disaster.
So much for making adjustments during the bye week. The offense was pitiful in the 17-7 loss against the Browncos.
Tony Grossi speculates that Jim Tressel would consider leaving Ohio State for the head job with the Cleveland Browns. I just don’t see that happening. Tressel is a great college coach and he has his dream job. He could possibly retire some day as the greatest coach in Ohio State history, surpassing even Woody Hayes. Why would he leave that? He doesn’t strike me as one of those guys that feels the need to prove himself again by jumping to the pros.
That said, if he ever does leave Ohio State, of course I’d like to see him here in Cleveland. But I’m hoping he stays in Columbus.
Troy Smith threw four touchdown passes in the first have as the Buckeyes breezed to a 44-3 victory over Indiana. Smith added another great play to his highlight reel, as he avoided the pass rush again to throw a beautiful pass to Ted Ginn for a touchdown.
