Buckeye coaches overcome adversity

The Ohio State Buckeye football team has to look no further than two assistant coaches when searching for inspiration to win a football game. Joe Daniels, the quarterback coach, and Jim Bollman, the offensive coordinator both battled heart problems during the off season.

Coach Daniels is being treated with biotherapy, which has him taking pills for 28 days then going off for 14 before repeating the cycle. He received an NCAA waiver to have a coach replace him if he couldn’t lead the team for any period of time. So far, he’s been up for the task.

Coach Bollman underwent bypass surgery on three clogged arteries during this past summer. He has participated in every practice to date, only saying he has to move a little slower than in the past. Both are entering the 6th season of coaching and enjoy being a part of Tressel and Buckeye nation.

The NFL is about to begin….with changes

The NFL Competition Committee continues to evaluate and improve the game of football. They usually concentrate on player safety, sportsmanship and general rules of the game. The regular season is less than one month away and they have implemented some subtle and obvious rule changes this year.

The NFL decided to shortened instant replay from 90 to 60 seconds and allows a team to have options after a referee blows an inadvertent whistle. These are two of the more obvious rules changes.

Bucks “D” to rely on youth

The Ohio State Buckeye defense is going to have many new faces this season. The three linebackers that were the backbone of last year’s defense are playing on Sundays. Coach Tressel is looking for new leaders and Lawrence Wilson may be a star of the future.

Wilson came out of high school ranked one of the top defensive ends in the country. He studied under Will Smith and Mike Kudla, both very successful in their careers, but very different. Wilson is currently listed at starting defensive end and with the intensity he brings to each practice, coaches expect him to stay at that spot for the next couple years. I will make an early prediction that with the speed training from Butch Reynolds, Wilson will anchor a surprisingly strong defense this year.

Browns have a “slash”?

The Cleveland Browns offensive already has numerous ways to score with so much talent at the skilled positions. The sleeper in this group may be 2nd year player, Josh Cribbs. Cribbs, a quarterback in college, has shown the ability to catch the ball and return kicks. The former Kent State QB could be used as a decoy if he’s able to throw the ball on gadget plays.

Cribbs ability could open up the Browns offense, as opponents will have to respect him when he enters the game. Charlie Frye is inexperience at quarterback and this type of versatility could help him buy time before making a decision with the ball.

Bucks have early test

The Ohio State Buckeyes open this year’s football season against a very talented MAC school. The Northern Illinois Huskies are the favorites to win the MAC west title. The Buckeyes usually play a mid-level division one school in one of their first two games. This opponent may be more of a challenge than Ohio State originally planned.

The Huskies running back, Garrett Wolfe, is coming off a very successful season. He rushed for over 1500 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. The Bucks rush defense will be tested early as Northern Illinois has a history of success on the ground. The MAC conference is known for competing in high scoring and wide open football games. Coach Tressel may be forced to unleash his talented early and let their speed put this game away.
