Paterno - a throwback

Posted on Thursday 6 October 2005

PD does a good profile of a guy who started at Penn State when Lombardi was at Green Bay.

“I believe age is just a number, and I’ve always thought there was something wonderful about longevity. The only thing wrong with old age is the alternative.”

Remember all that talk that Paterno should retire last year? No so much this year, eh? Penn State beats OSU on Saturday, he’s got a national championship contender on his hands. Not bad for an old-timer.

A good preview of the Nittany Lions is here. This will be no walk-over for the Bucks. Especially on the road.

Coach Brown on Gooden - D up

Posted on Thursday 6 October 2005

Today’s PD

“I see length. I see athleticism. I see energy, and I see hustle,” Brown said. “I see unlimited potential to be a great defensive player and to be a great rebounder offensively or defensively. He should give guys fits in that painted area. The sky’s the limit for Drew.”

They wanna focus him on defense. Anyone think he can play defense? I’m not convinced he can make the transition, but if he does, yet another reason to be optimistic about what could be an awesome team.

New mixed drink at Browns Stadium - Orton & Jack

Posted on Thursday 6 October 2005

Romeo Crennel is more worried about his defense than about how much Jack Daniels Kyle Orton downed during the bye week.

There are some unflattering photographs of Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Kyle Orton circulating on the Internet. In one, he holds a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey and his chin and T-shirt are sopping wet. In the other, he flashes the mid dle finger of his left hand to the camera.

“All I have to do is tell them look at the stats,” said coach Romeo Crennel. “We’re at the bottom of the NFL defensively…I’m not worried about [Orton], I’m worried about us,” Crennel continued. “If you want to take anybody lightly being at the bottom, I don’t know who it can be. I’m telling our guys, this is an NFL quarterback. He has enough ability to be an NFL quarterback, so you better honor him.”

See said NFL QB, Coach Daniels, and Kyle’s middle finger here.

Bulletin board material for OT L.J. Shelton

Posted on Thursday 6 October 2005

Picked this up in the Chicago Sun Times regarding Bears defensive end Alex Brown, who’s getting pressure for failing to follow up his four sack performance against the Giants last year…

Brown will square off Sunday against Cleveland Browns left tackle L.J. Shelton, whom the Bears pursued for a while during the offseason. Shelton is steady but susceptible to an up-and-under move. Cleveland has been using a short passing game to control the ball through the air with veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer, and the Bears, with the league’s ninth-ranked run defense, would be well-served to disrupt Dilfer’s timing.

Susceptible to an up-and-under move? I love how the local paper is coaching the Bears…is Shelton putting this article up on his locker?
