Ninth career triple-double, first game-winner for LeBron

After continually being criticized for never being able to hit a game winning shot, LeBron James finally got that monkey off his back during the Cavaliers’ thrilling 120-118 overtime victory over the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night. With time winding down and the game tied, LeBron, who finished with 37 points, pulled up for a mid-range jumper to give the Cavaliers their third straight win. Not to be overlooked, Flip Murray was the man again late in fourth quarter, hitting a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to send the game to overtime. This guy continues to hit big shots at key times for the Cavs.

Hopefully Wednesday’s game winning heroics by LeBron will shut up the critics once and for all. And how about that outstanding pass by James to Flip at the end of regulation.

Small moves could be huge come April

Phil Savage and the Browns have made a large splash in the free agent market in the last week. They’ve shelled out over $100 million on the likes of LeCharles Bentley, Ted Washington, Willie McGinest, and Joe Jurevicious. One of the biggest Browns offseasons in recent memory, it’s these big names that have grabbed the headlines, and rightfully so. But with the NFL draft approaching next month, it is Savage’s minor moves that have been overlooked and could prove extremely beneficial for the Browns.

They recently traded safety Chris Crocker, netting a fourth round pick in return. Crocker proved to be expendable with Sean Jones and Brodney Pool waiting in the wings at the safety spot. Last season during training camp, the Browns sent wide receiver Andre Davis to the Patriots for a fifth rounder. And with LeCharles Bentley on board, center Jeff Faine may be on his way out soon, possibly giving us another draft pick via trade. So as it stands now, the Browns have nine picks in April’s draft, one in each round and two in the fourth and fifth.

With the high number of mid-round picks the Browns hold, it will give the team some strong flexibility. If they choose to keep the picks, they will be able to stockpile players with the hopes of filling holes and giving the Browns depth. And with Phil Savage’s scouting ability and eye for talent, the Browns would have a greater chance of perhaps grabbing a few diamonds in the rough. Some past fourth and fifth rounders who have emerged in the NFL recently include Nathan Vasher, Domanick Davis, Alex Brown, Randy McMichael, Larry Foote, Rudi Johnson, and Andra Davis.

On the other hand, they could choose to package all or some of those middle picks to move up in the first round (where they have the 12th pick) or even get an extra pick in the second or third. Whatever route Savage and the Browns choose to take come draft day, they unquestionably have a luxury and a lot options to work with.

Damon beats buzzer, Raptors

He has struggled all season and has been criticized by the media and fans for his poor production. For one night though, Damon Jones was able to play the role of hero. Jones, who replaced Flip Murray for the final play, knocked down a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to propel the Cavaliers to a 98-97 victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday. In an almost identical play to the one the Cavs ran last week to beat the Bulls, LeBron James drove the lane and kicked it out to one of his teammates. This time it was Damon Jones ready to take the shot.

“He’s been criticized at times, but I’ve never lost confidence him. That’s why we picked him up. He’s a shooter,” James said.

The Cavaliers were able to overcome a pair of 30-point performances by Toronto’s Mike James and Morris Peterson to win their fourth straight contest.

As much as we have ripped Damon Jones the entire season, he deserves the credit for the terrific shot he made tonight. His confidence has been wavering all year and maybe this is just what he needs to get him going for the rest of the season. And how about the coaching by Mike Brown, sitting Flip Murray for the last play in favor of Jones. Maybe he saw something in the defense or just had confidence in Damon but whatever the reason, it turned out to be a genius move on his part. The Cavaliers seem to be making a habit out of last second finishes recently, but it sure does make for some exciting basketball.

Team effort gets Cavs a W

LeBron James wasn’t having the greatest night, by his standards, so he needed to get help from his supporting cast and that’s exactly what happened in Tuesday night’s 106-99 victory over the Toronto Raptors. For the first time in 24 games, LeBron was not the leading scorer for the Cavaliers as Flip Murray put down 24. Although LeBron finished with 12 rebounds and 8 assists, he struggled from the field, shooting 5 of 17.

“When he has an off night like that, he has to have confidence that we can pick him up,” said Murray, who has given the Cavs a spark since arriving in a Feb. 23 trade with Seattle. “That’s what we did.”

All five Cavalier starters finished in double figures and Eric Snow had a season-high 11 assists as the Cavs won their third straight.

These are the types of games we need to win. In the past, if LeBron didn’t have a great game the Cavaliers usually weren’t going to come out winners. It was great to see the rest of the team step up for a change and we are going to need a strong team effort every game, especially when it comes playoff time.

Pryce visits Cleveland

News out of Denver is that former Broncos DE Trevor Pryce is planning to visit the Cleveland Browns Tuesday. The Denver Post reports Pryce, who was recently cut by the Broncos as a cap casualty, will make his first free agent stop in Cleveland and will visit more teams in the next few days. Pryce had a $10.2 million cap number last season.

The Browns would be spending a decent chunk of their free agent money if they were to sign Trevor Pryce but I say it’s definitely worth it. Pryce, 30, is a four-time Pro Bowler who has built a very success career in Denver the last nine seasons. He was part of a Denver defensive line that was one of the best in the league last season. They were second in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game, and we all know how poor the Browns’ run defense was. One of the keys of this offseason for the Browns is to strengthen that front line and Pryce could be the man to do that. Our run defense and pass rush are arguably the two weakest aspects of our team and having Pryce on the line would be a huge upgrade. Having Roye and Pryce would be pretty solid.

Granted, there will be several other teams bidding for him, but let’s hope Savage at least attempts to put a good offer out on the table. We’ve got the money to make a serious run at him so let’s sign him because he’s a stud.
