LeBron’s MVP hopes officially shattered, comes in second

As has been rumored for the last couple weeks, Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash was voted the MVP for the second straight season. LeBron James finished in second place in front of Dirk Nowitzski, Kobe Bryant, and Chauncey Billups. James tallied 16 first place votes and 688 overall behind Nash’s 57 and 924. Despite failing to win it this season, the 21-year-old star knows there will be plenty of chances in the future.

“It would have been nice of course to put another trophy in my house, in my showcase,” he said from Auburn Hills, Mich., before the Cavaliers played the Detroit Pistons. “But it’s something I’m going to keep working hard for. I can’t dwell on not being named MVP.”

Obviously I, as well as every other Cavalier fan, have campaigned all along for LeBron to win the award this season but it isn’t the end of the world. His reign and dominance in the league is only beginning and he will have plenty of time to rack up MVP trophies. I guess this just wasn’t his year.

Sabathia strong again as Tribe wins series

C.C Sabathia had his second outstanding start in a row as he blanked the Seattle Mariners 2-0 Sunday. The Tribe only managed four hits in the game but it didn’t matter as Sabathia went eight innings. Grady Sizemore and Ronnie Belliard each had an RBI for the Indians and Bob Wickman got his 130th career save as an Indian, moving him to first all-time among Tribe closers.

“He pitched smart. I was really impressed with the way C.C. and Victor worked together,” Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said. “We talked about starters finishing off innings, whether it be the sixth, or seventh or, in C.C.’s case today, the eighth inning and getting us through that. He did a good job of that.”

Cavs get stomped in Game 1

LeBron and the Cavs may be in store for a long, long series with the Pistons. In the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Pistons destroyed the Cavaliers 113-86 Sunday afternoon. An insane three-point showing put the Pistons up early and basically set the game out of reach. In the first half, they knocked down 10 of 11 threes and built a 21-point lead.

“They’re going to sweep the rest of the playoffs if they shoot like that and win the NBA championship,” James said. “We shot 50 percent and had only six turnovers in the first half and were down 22. It’s hard to explain that.”

On the other end, the Pistons displayed their usual stingy defense. LeBron was held to 22 points and the rest of the James gang couldn’t muster up any offense behind him. The Cavaliers got it handed to them in Game 1 and they’re going to have to pick themselves up off the dirt otherwise they will have no chance in this series.

Cavs square off with Pistons in second round

The Cavaliers have finished one of the most thrilling and intense first-round series in the NBA playoffs. Can they carry that momentum over to the Detroit series or will they be too emotionally and mentally drained? The Cavaliers will face the top seed Detroit Pistons in the second round. The Pistons showed their dominance by disposing of the Milwaukee Bucks 4-1 in the first round. The boys from Motown completed their series awhile ago so they will be nice and rested while the Cavs are coming off six hard-fought battles with Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards. The series begins Sunday afternoon in Detroit.

If we continue to play solid defense and get production from the bench I think we have a chance to make it a competitive series. However, in reality, I believe the former champion Pistons will prove to be too much for the young Cavaliers. Not to say that we have no chance of beating Detroit, but they are just too strong of a team and they already have our number this season. They have that grit and aggressiveness as shown by the way they have pushed around the Cavs physically. When it’s all said and done, I say the Pistons take the series 4-2.

Pineiro shuts down Tribe offense

Joel Pineiro handcuffed the Indians Saturday as he went eight strong innings, giving up only one run in the Mariners’ 4-1 victory over the Tribe. Grady Sizemore got the lone run on a solo homer in the first inning. Cliff Lee pitched well but it was Pineiro who got the better end of the pitcher’s duel. The usually potent Tribe offense was held to only four hits in the ballgame.

“Pineiro was as good as any pitcher we’ve seen all year long in terms of a well-pitched ball game,” Wedge said. “He had it all working tonight. He had the sinker working, he was cutting the ball, he had a good changeup, he had the breaking ball going as well — and all with command.”

The Indians seemed to just have an off night with the bats and hopefully they’ll be able to bounce back and win the series Sunday.
