Charlie Frye and the Browns started out hot by opening up a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and held Michael Vick in check enough to preserve their 17-13 victory.
The offense may not have looked pretty at times, but they did just enough to win as the Browns’ defense was very impressive in their efforts to contain the dangerous Falcon offense. Browns touchdowns were scored by Rueben Droughns on a 1-yard run on fourth down in the first quarter and a Braylon Edwards 19-yard pass from Charlie Frye in the second quarter. Kellen Winslow, who led the team with 90 yards on 5 catches, had a couple of outstanding grabs on sideline streaks.
It was the defense which did a nice job of controlling the Falcons when the Browns sputtered offensively in the second half and Sean Jones picked off yet another pass for his fifth INT of the season.
Just what we needed heading into next week’s home battle with Pittsburgh!

just think what their record would be if they would of started with davidson! where are all the “mo” supporters now?
BEAT SHITTSBURGH!!!!!!!!
Both Cleveland and Pitt showed what happens when they don’t turn the ball over as much as the other team. Now let’s see the Brownies beat Pitt on a huge football weekend next week.
While the win was important for players’ (and dare I say coaches) confidence it was very worrying to watch the team sputter for basically 3 quarters. Yes, they scored the field goal near the end, but that will not cut it against pittsburgh (at least not usually)
Hey John Blake, come the ‘07 NFL Draft, who should the Browns take with their #1 pick depending on their record?
this is the first time Vic has ever lost to an AFC team at home.
i am so proud of this team i could scream.
i was in the stands for the Jets game, and i still enjoyed this win more.
These Dogs will have their days… keep the faith.
HAYWOOD
Nice win, I don’t wanna dump on them for the past. This is the competitiveness I has hoping for when the season started. If the offense can get started, I don’t see why they can’t beat Pittsburgh. These guys are mad from getting their asses handed to them last year. Now they are beginning to understand what the rivalry is about. Go Browns

With the injuries to the secondary and Baxter’s future in jeopardy, you would think cornerback would be one of the Browns’ most glaring needs going into the 07 draft, but with the way they’ve been playing lately with second and third stringers, I’m not so sure the corner spot is that much of a concern anymore. Big props to Mel Tucker for his work gelling the defensive backs this season despite all the injuries.
No matter what our record is at the end of the season, I think we could concentrate on drafting an offensive lineman in round 1, and maybe even in round 2. Our line has been absolutley horrendous thus far. Bentley MIGHT be back next season but you can’t count on that. With the number of Browns’ O-linemen who are free agent-to-be’s at the end of the season, I think that should be the #1 priority come draft day. I like the way our D is shaping up and our backs, receivers, and tight ends are set.
That being said, it seems like there will be a better quality of tackles coming out of college than there will be guards.
John you say, “there will be a better quality of tackles coming out of college than there will be guards” like we need new tackles. We need, I think to draft guards. You can not tell me that Joe Andruzzi & Cosey Coleman should be starting next year because they are TERRIBLE!!! I agree that Tucker is not the best, in fact he probably would make good trade bait for some team like the Texans that are stupid enough to take him.
Also concerning are defense we still have problems. #1) We canot stop the run, which was suppose to happen when signed Ted Washington. I believe we rank againstt stopping the run at 25th, but I could be wrong. #2) We can’t consistently get pressure to the QB. I mean when Wimbley and Mcginst line up at Defensive End teams know who is blitzing. The Browns need to draft as you said O-linemen, but also DL as well.
Your Response?
Big win for the Brownies! The defense did their job with a A+ in my opinion. The offense sputtered again-against a bad injury riddled defense. Mora and Knapp has to be the worst off. play callers I ever seen. They actually were funny and I’ve never seen so many dropped passes by NFL players that they got 2 hands on. Outstanding defense.

Did you really expect a 38 year old 365 lb dl lineman would fix the run game for an entire defense. Please….reality people….this defense is really good. The young guys are really beginning to show potential and promise for the future. I love what the secondary has done, and lb’s are really coming along. But, ted Washington was only a patch job, the Browns still need to find a young promising 3-4 nose guard. Unfortunately, like o lineman teams keep the great ones and let go of the average ones. The Browns need to draft players up front (o-line and d-line) and fill any reamining holes via free agency.
As for the offense, there was improvement, C. Frye had a much better game. He still needs to develop that inner clock in his head. He takes to many hits, which is why he has so many fumbles. But it seemed that he knew what he wanted to do with the football a little better and he is slowly learning from past mistakes. Again reality…do you remeber when you were 25 years old..it took a while to learn from the past. My criticism is that they needed to score one more TD before they went into run mode. I like the 5 receiver sets, I thought their scheme was better, they just got to conservative. But, they made plays when they had to and that is why we got the W.
Good game I like what i see in their progress….Now its time for Business…Pay back time against the Steelers.
The best part of the game was watching Charlie throwing out of the spread offense in the shotgun. The Patriots have used this formation for years, and I’m glad to see Davidson working it into the Browns offense. This gives Charlie more time to see the defense and mixes things up.
As for the draft, it’s a little early to start making these decisions. As John said, the secondary is starting to play better, and they are teaching these no-name DBs to play well, while the safeties have been fantastic.
They also could spend big bucks on one or two guards in the offseason as well.
That said, I agree with Vic, the O-line and the D-line will probably be the big priorities.
Although I agree with G that’s it’s early to be talking draft, O line is absolutely the first priority in our draft. From there, I would concentrate on D line.
