Terry Pluto isn’t impressed with mark Shapiro’s argument that Eric Wedge is his “partner.” As Pluto points out, Shapiro is the boss and he needs to let Wedge know that. Pluto points out the painful example of the Brandon Phillips fiasco. Wedge didn’t want him, so Shapiro let him go and basically got nothing in return. Now we need a second baseman for 2007.

ditto that. this feel good buddy crap has got to go. their is a hierarchy for a reason. i also read in pluto’s latest indians book about the “mission statements” and other inspirationl corporate bullshit they have around the office.
it’s all a load of CRAP.
I agree 100%!!! The fact that Mark Shapiro uses the word “partnership” to describe his relationship with Eric Wedge tells me that he really doesn’t understand what his own job is!! Right now there are several people availabe who would be major upgrades over Eric Wedge–but Shapiro has this ‘partnership’ with Wedge–so he’s not going to do his job and go get one of them. If he really wants to build a championship caliber team (his job), hiring a good manager is where he should start. The Detriot GM understands this—he went out and got Jim Leland. Look what happened…..
I’ll admit I stuck by Wedge during the season, but when the Peralta incident happened, I lost confidence. Any other manager would have sent Peralta to Buffalo to a least make a point to him and the other players.
We don’t know what is going on behind the scenes and Shapiro is a tactful man that he won’t throw anyone under the bus. What we do know is the Wedge is here next year (contract extension), unless the Dolans buy out his contract. Yeah like that will happen.
Shapiro will once again enter a rather weak free agent market with the Dolans pocket welded shut. So any player that Cleveland gets will have to come here because he loves the game and wants to be a veteran leader for this young team. But veterans don’t come cheap and Larry Dolan is.
