Rash as it may have seemed, Kellen Winslow Jr.’s criticism of some of the coaches and the offensive game plan is warranted. It’s about time someone stepped forward. K2 is a player who is as intense and fiery as they come and will say it like it is. Winslow decided to put his foot down and didn’t want to stay silent anymore so he spoke out and vented his frustrations about the offense, mostly the fact that he was taken out during certain third down situations last Sunday.
“I think some of the coaches might just be holding us back a little bit,'’ Winslow said Monday at the end of the team’s open locker room with the media.
“The Giants run the same system as we do. The Cowboys run the same system as we do. And (Jason) Witten and (Jeremy) Shockey are on the field on third down,'’ he said of their use of tight ends. “I just don’t understand why I’m not on the field sometimes.'’
He didn’t mention names specifically but most of us could assume Winslow was pointing toward the play-calling of offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon. Chances are most of the players in that locker room feel the same way but just don’t want to go public with it. Well, Winslow did, and I can respect him for that.
Listen, the team is struggling right now. We are only two games into the season and it is looking like we are headed down the path of another long, frustrating, and emotionally draining season with the Browns. The team is bad, one of the worst in the NFL, and things aren’t going to get much better if things don’t change quickly. Speaking just about the offense, we all know the play-calling has been atrocious and downright baffling at times. But this isn’t news to us. Carthon has been on shaky ground ever since he took over the offensive coordinator position last season. Up to this point, the team has been riding it out with Carthon calling plays, which has not yielded many positive results offensively.
What Winslow said is right. Especially on third down, you need your best weapons out on the field. Why wasn’t he out there? Only Carthon can answer us that. Browns fans have been growing more and more impatient with this man as the weeks progress, and deservedly so. All I can say is, thank God somebody said something. People may argue that Winslow should just mind his business, keep his mouth shut, and do what the coaches tell him. But the team is winless, has looked awful thus far, and is in need of a good kick in the you know what. Let’s face it, as he says, we really have nothing to lose.
Winslow delivered the message loud and clear, now it’s up to Carthon and the coaching staff to turn things around.

i am totally behind winslow on this one. probably the smartest thing he’s said since he’s been a public figure.
looks like difler was right in his comments last year. and things loook preyty good for antonio bryant in SF right now.
how bad does it have to be that they can make even antonio bryant look smart! but what can you expect from an organization that continues to make idiotic senseless moves since it’s inept return. i don’t expect anything more from this outfit other than incompetence and idiocy anymore. they ae just a bunch of bumbling idiots who have no clue how to run an nfl team.
Even though it sounds like he’s being a hot dog, I love K2’s comments. Maybe it will fire up the organization. Like he said, we’re 0-2 …… what can we lose! However, I would have preferred he say that in a team meeting, because now other teams will be gunning for K2. That’s usually the way it is when somebody is outsopoken like that. He could have said the same thing in a private team meeting and fired up the team that way. Oh well, stay tuned!
Winslow said it,
we all thought it. This is differnt than showing up the coaches because we all know Carthon has the play calling abilities of a 5 year old (oops maybe I shouldn’t give him that much credit). We go long once per game compared to Cinci’s 20 or 30, of course long for the Carthon is anything over 5 yards. Now next game he’ll do nothing but throw deep. Here is a clue Carthon, pass when they think run and run when they think pass, or is that too simple for you.
The thing I find funny about the play calling is I can sit at the bar and watch the games with fellow browns fans we KNOW what play is going to called. Imagine, if we as fans know what is coming then the opposing team sure as heck knows what’s coming.
Just watching the MNF game last night it is very apparent that we are a very different league then the Steelers, Jags, Colts, Bengals etc… They look like professional football teams. It is like we are the KC Royals and they are the Yankees.
Funny. Like every other time he speaks I think he should shut the hell up and just play. Things like this should be handled internally like Jurevicious said this morning. Now every player has to answer these questions and he just added another slot on the totem pole of problems the Browns got. How about this Winslow-when it’s 3rd down -you need to know where the person is lining up and that this person is running the correct route and has their head in the game…..hint, hint.
btw, here is an interesting stat, pointed out by a woman in the local rag fort worth paper, crennel is 1-6 against divisional opponents! does anyone think he will win a game this year against any of the other 3 teams in the division? does anyone remember how marty used to dominate the old central back in the mid 80s? i never thought i would have to refer to those as the “good old days”….
we all know that you think carthon should be fired and his playcalling is terrible and kellen should be in on third down. but why do you need to poll people on it. just to try and prove your point even more. you keep hammering the same thoughts over and over and we get the point. it gets old though. you having to poll people to try and prove you point kinda makes me think that you dont really know if you are right or not.
Well it seams like I’m not the only one who’s frustrated with the performance of the Browns. Now the “Chosen One”, the self proclaimed “Soilder” is tired of the inconsistent play of the offense. Coaches know their players, they know how to get the most from them. The Browns coaches are not doing that so well. Who expected Jimmy Johnson to turn around the Cowboys as fast as he did. What about Mike Holmgren in Green Bay. If Crennell is going to be one of those coaches, first he has to get a proven offensive coordinator, because he’s got the weapons on offense. Open up the play calling. Maybe Carthon doesn’t know that many plays, maybe he’s giving the team the best that he’s got. That’s scary. But over the past 18 games, this guy has convinced me he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. His scheme doesn’t work. Maybe it would if this were high school, but not in the NFL. How many times has the quarterback thrown over 300 yrds? This guy sucks!
