Kenny Roda from WKNR SportsTalk 850 will be writing a weekly blog on Cleveland Scores covering the sports world both locally and nationally. Check back often for his updates!
I’m going to put as much time into this blog as the Browns seemed to put into their game plan for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati. The way I figure it, if they’re not going to put any effort into it, why should I force myself to break down a 34-17 loss to the Bengals that wasn’t as close as the score indicates.
1. The Browns weren’t ready for the Bengals no-huddle.
2. Why did it take the Browns three quarters before they decided to throw deep?
3. The Browns gave up 160 yards on the ground, 145 to Rudi Johnson. That’s 310 yards on the ground in two games. So much for that improved run defense!
4. Carson Palmer threw for 352 yards.
5. Braylon Edwards dropped 2 passes, while the team as a whole dropped 5.
6. Maurice Carthon should be fired, his play calling stinks!
7. Why doesn’t Kellen Winslow Jr. stay on the field for every third down opportunity, even if they use him just as a decoy?
8. Don’t look now, but the Baltimore Ravens are coming to Cleveland on Sunday with a 2-0 record, having outscored the opposition 55 to 6. Charlie, I hope you have life insurance!
9. In the AFC North, the Bengals, Ravens and Steelers (as of Sunday) are a combined 5-0…the Browns are 0-2.
10. Team MVP so far…Punter Dave Zastudil!
That’s it. Nothing more needs to be said.

You spent WAY more time then the Browns and even forgot a few observations. First you missed QB Palmer having enough time to do his laundry in the backfield. Do the browns have a pass play designed to go more than 5 yards at the beginning of the game, I doubt it. Has the team heard of spread offense to spread the defense, then run between the tackles, hmmmm I don’t think so. I think there are plenty of 8 year olds that could call plays better than Carthon. Second you missed that they dropped into coverage on 3rd and long every single time and gave Palmer time to complete passes for just over what they needed for first downs. Do the Browns only Blitz on second down? We all had hopes of winning as many games as last year. HAH, that is such a joke, 3 wins would be a success for this offense. PS the defense is not any better.
Sorry Kenny,
I Meant do the Browns Blitz on anything BUT 2nd Down. Not from what I saw.
Kenny,
You are right on for just about everything. In my opinion there were only 2 bright spots in the entire game.
1. Charlie was sacked 0 times. This was a nice change from the previous week and shows the pass blocking is coming together, if only the run blocking was the same
2. Penalties. Finally a game were we did not have any penalties come back to hurt us. Granted we only had a few big plays but everytime I could not get excited until I made sure there were no flags thrown.
If they can improve on something every week then that is a start. Personally, the Ravens game is not going to be fun to watch but the only solace is that we have the Raiders the following week.
Roda, honestly i do not really care about all the crying involving the browns. Face it people they suck and there is no sign of them improving. The best bet is to lose as many game as they can so that they may get the #1 pick in the draft. With that pick take the best “O” lineman there is, or maybe trade down a pick or two{get some more picks} and still get the best “O” lineman. How about more talk on the #1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes a true football team.
i agree with chris, there is no way they will compete or even be competitive in the north. hell, they are already 2 games out after 2 games, and will be 3 out after this next week! this team has become a joke and i see nothing changing, 7 years now and 1 winning season, the rest , double digit loss seasons, pathetic, abosulety pathetic, and all we hear are excuses, we used this player for this reason, that player on that play to…..the only thing even close to professional football within 100 miles of cleveland are the buckeyes.
kenny -
man i feel bad that you have to try and spend several hours every day trying to talk about this CRAP year after year.
it’s only 2 games in and i am completely done with this season. i refuse to spend any time watching this team from this point on unless they can show me something by winning a couple in a row.
and i have a hard time caring about the draft next year too, because i have yet to see that it makes any difference since the browns have been back.
i’m pretty sure cavaliers training beings really soon.
I was very depressed yesterday after the Browns loss, but am a little less depressed this morning after watching the Steelers do absolutely nothing last night on Monday Night Football. At least I feel a little better no - thanks Pitts-puke!
Man, I’m so tired of watching this crap on t.v. We’ve got all this talent, but man this team sucks. I know that they weren’t going to make the playoffs, but these jokers aren’t even competitive. Where’s the run defense they were bragging about? Carthon isn’t even giving the playmakers on offense an opportunity to make plays. This is brutal, I don’t know how much more of this I can take.
nice to see winslow come out and expose the offensive coaching staff for being a joke. same as dilfer did. i wonder who else is going to get chased off this team by carthon.
things are pretty strange with jurevicious too. just watch and see people. something beyond his rib injury is happening behind the scenes. it will come out sooner or later.
obviously its either carthon’s losing ways or the highway.
things are looking pretty peachy in SF for antonio bryant and dilfer right now compared to the situation they would be in with the browns.
something is up with mcginest too. he is either pissed about something or he’s another “keith hernandez” situation for cleveland sports.
there is some weird crap going on with this team. and stop defending carthon whoever is. if coaches didn’t matter in the outcome then anyone could be, would be a coach. yes, we’ve got players messing up, but teams operate from the top down. it all starts with coaching.
3rd and 8 on the Bengals 45? Let’s run up the middle to kill the drive and set up a nice punt. That’s Carthon.
Funny how I wrote this sunday nite and Winslow comes out and says his piece on monday afternoon. I’ve never been a big fan of K-2 spoutting off in the past but this time I tip my cap or helmet or whatever to him. Someone other than a member of the media needed to say something to get the coaches attention and that’s exactly what he did. Now lets see how Romeo handles this and what happens to the play calling. From what my reliable sources have told me, dating back to last year, players questioned Maurice Carthon’s play calling and handling of the offensive coordinator’s position. New season, some new players and again my reliable sources tell me players are still questioning Carthon and thank goodness for Winslow doing it publicly. He said what alot of players wanted to say but didn’t have the balls to say.
Kenny,
Unfortunately we are stuck with Carthon for this year as I doubt the Browns would change during the season. The sad thing is that any normal fan could call plays better than this idiot. One more question Kenny, would Tressell take Gin out on third downs, point made!!!
Kenny, get a life, are Clevelanders that dumb that they need you to tell them that their team is bad, day after day after day.
