The Bowl Championship Series is continually criticized for which team doesn’t make the BCS games each year. This year the rules will help one school make it that shouldn’t. The system only allows two teams from each conference to be invited to the BCS competition.
Notre Dame will most likely receive millions of dollars by playing in a BCS contest this year. The 10-2 Irish will compete solely on popularity and not talent. The only two “real” opponents Notre Dame faced this season blasted them by at least 20 points. Michigan won by 26 in the shadow of the golden dome.
Wisconsin and LSU will be left out of the competition because of this rule. These two teams, along with many others, are more talented than the Irish. So, while I think we need a playoff to determine the real Champion, we need to take popularity out of the formula too.

I like the idea of a playoff. It will give teams like Louisville and Rutgers an opportunity to prove that inspite of having one loss, they are still as good or better than ND. What about Boise State? They also went undefeated. In a playoff, they would have an opportunity to prove if they are as good as their record indicates. To me, the BCS or the bull crap system, is a joke. It’s all about ratings, and money. These guys are not interested in the two best teams playing for the national title. If that were the case, Rutgers, WV, UL, and Boise State would all be ranked higher than Notre Lame. But, with all the alumni, and boosters ND has, why not let them in.
In the words of the immortal lyricist Master P, “Money makes the world go round.”
Actually, LSU will likely get a bid to a BCS game and it will be the loser of the Fla-Arkansas game that will be left out (and if Arkansas loses, they’re a 3 loss team and clearly don’t deserve a BCS bid). I completely agree about Wisconsin though.
Adam,
Great point. If Arkansas wins, I bet Florida gets the other bid….I just think Notre Dame has proved NOTHING and Weiss has a big mouth. I’m just spoiled with how classy Tressel it.
BCS is a joke,
and we all know it. I think the hottest team at the end of last year was OSU and I would have put them against anyone. If there can be a playoff in every other division then lets sit down and get one in this division. The bowl games can be used as playoffs and get just as much money. How about splitting all the games in the playoffs amoungst all the teamsin the playoffs. That might actually get more support from some schools that don’t get as much for playing lesser bowls. There has to be a way to do this that makes sense. Lets hope that more obvious inequities develope soon in this system so that changes will be made shortly.
